In the frame of Ateliers Médicis residency program Création en cours, I had the chance to be immersed in the middle of Brittany and to work with 23 students from Primary School Jean Rostand in Gourin.
The project Territoire - Habit - Habitat questions the influences the environment can have on man-made things. How is the context shaping the things we do ? From the Breton territory and the «Pays du roi Morvan» in particular, the children followed several workshops that led to the creation of pictures, headdresses, and large-scale shelters.
The project explored the imaginary of a tribe, focusing on two main issues: how to protect ourselves from the world, and how to develop an identity. From the body to the space, from the individual to the collective, from the habit to the habitat, this territorial anchorage is an opportunity to rediscover a local culture, sometimes unknown by the kids. It is also a pretext to approach abstract notions more specific to the design field, like modular construction, composition or framing.
